The Background

Let me be totally upfront with you about this article. I didn’t set out to write a post like this but some events have come up that prompted me to share a recent experiment with you that involved posting a photo on Instagram and how I was able to get contract work with just that one post. Here is how it all started…One morning, I needed to go to the store to get some random groceries (not sure exactly what but that really isn’t important to the story) and as I was walking out I noticed some real estate marketing magazines on racks that are right near the entrance and exits. I figured it might be a good idea to grab one of them to give them a look and see if I can contact some agents who might need real estate photography services. It might not work to get new clients but I thought I would give it a shot. When I got home, I made some coffee and went up to my office like a normally do to start my work day. As I was sipping my coffee, I thought it would be a good opportunity to post an Instagram picture to my business page stating I was “doing some research” while drinking my morning coffee. It was just a simple photo to show a little behind the scenes look of my photography business. After taking the photo and applying the relevant hashtags, I tagged the company that produces the magazine (even though they only had 2 photos and their account didn’t seem too active). I thought it couldn’t hurt and at the most I would get like from the company.

The First Contact

So now, fast forward a week or so, and almost forgetting that I posted that particular photo on Instagram, the company relied to the post and said ‘Love this! Mind if we repost?”. When I first saw the reply I honestly didn’t know which photo it was for but then quickly realized it was the company acknowledging they saw the photo and really like it! This is when I started to get excited because if they repost, it was possible that real estate agents in the area would see the repost and that I might start getting more calls for more jobs. After replaying to their comment that I would absolutely love a repost I didn’t hear from them again and as of the time I am writing this article, they still haven’t reposted. Now I went from enthusiastic and excited to totally bummed. The only upside I found at this point was knowing that posts like this can actually work at getting your business out there and should start doing more things like this.

The Phone Call

After that first initial contact came, about another week went by and still I didn’t see any repost of my photo. Then out of the blue, I received a phone call on my business phone line. I didn’t recognize the number so I let it go to voicemail but after listing to the message a couple times, I realized it was actually the company that owns the magazine that was in my Instagram photo. They were really vague about what they wanted to talk about and just asked me to give them a call back as soon as I had the time. I dropped everything and quickly called them back. When we first started talking they we’re asking about my business, what I do, the types of services I offer, just the normal stuff. I honestly thought it was a way for them to get to know my business and they maybe ask me if I wanted to advertise in the magazine. I didn’t know for sure why the guys was calling so I was just giving him all the normal information. Then we started talking about drones and how I used them for my real estate photography. Honestly we could have talked about these thing for hours as I have a slight obsession with them but it turned out that they actually purchased a VERY high-end drone and could use some help with getting video of the neighborhoods and communities in the area. So basically he was giving my a small interview over the phone to see if I could help them out and I was clueless to it. They were needing someone who can assist their current drone pilot and getting cinematic footage of these communities and asking if I would like to help. This part got me really excited because now if have the opportunity to do some fairly steady contract with with them that could ultimately end up in a great business relationship.

Conclusion (as of now)

As of the time of writing this blog post, I have a meeting scheduled to meet with the company and go over all of their needs and see how I can help them with drone work as well as other possible projects like video editing, graphic design, photos, etc. It is really crazy to think that this all started by running to the grocery store, grabbing a magazine, and taking a silly behind the scenes photo for my Instagram. This just goes to show you that it can be a real pain to keep up with your social media presence but if you are marketing the right people and target the right areas, it is possible to come across amazing opportunities like this one.
